Abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless examination that is key to good health. Thanks to this procedure, we can accurately assess the condition of organs such as the liver, pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, bile ducts, and intestines. During the examination, we can also visualize the kidneys, aorta, large blood vessels, and the urinary bladder. Additionally, for men, there is the possibility of evaluating the prostate gland, and for women, the reproductive organs.
Organs assessed during abdominal ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound examination allows us to detect any abnormalities in the structure and size of organs. This is important both for monitoring diseases and detecting tumors and metastases. The examination can be performed multiple times, is relatively inexpensive, and widely available. It does not require a referral, so it can be done privately. It is recommended to undergo a preventive abdominal ultrasound examination at least once every two years, especially for individuals over the age of 40.
During the abdominal ultrasound examination, it is possible not only to assess the size of organs and detect abnormalities in their structure but also to identify tumors, cysts, and diseases such as kidney or gallbladder stones. It is also the primary method for diagnosing abdominal aortic aneurysm, pancreatitis, kidney cancer, liver cancer, appendicitis, and venous thrombosis. In case of doubts about the examination results, additional tests such as tumor markers or biopsies are recommended.
The course of the abdominal ultrasound examination

The procedure of abdominal ultrasound examination is simple and non-invasive. The patient lies on their back, and a special gel is applied to the skin to facilitate the movement of the ultrasound probe over the abdomen. The examination image appears on the monitor, and the doctor can zoom in to improve diagnostics. The entire examination usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. After completion, the patient receives the examination results along with a description. If you experience shortness of breath, a feeling of pressure in the neck area, or have difficulty swallowing, it is necessary to undergo a thyroid ultrasound. The ultrasound examination not only allows the evaluation of the thyroid's size and the detection of any abnormalities in its structure but also helps identify cysts, nodules, and other changes that may not be palpable during a physical examination. In case of any abnormalities found during the thyroid ultrasound, the doctor may order further tests, such as a thyroid biopsy, which helps differentiate benign changes from cancerous ones. Thyroid ultrasound is also a highly effective tool in diagnosing thyroid inflammations, such as Hashimoto's disease and Graves' disease.

Doppler ultrasound examination is painless, non-invasive, and can be repeated multiple times. At the Kazimierczak Orthodontics and Radiology clinic, we perform Doppler ultrasound examinations of the veins and arteries of the upper and lower extremities, Doppler ultrasound of the liver and kidneys (including transplants), Doppler ultrasound of neck arteries, and evaluation of skin lesions (hemangiomas), as well as renal arteries. For Doppler ultrasound examinations of abdominal organs, preparation is necessary - fasting for at least 8 hours, no consumption of carbonated beverages, and no smoking on the day of the examination. Doppler ultrasound examination of the extremities and neck arteries does not require special preparation. During the Doppler examination, the radiologist applies gel to the area being examined and moves the ultrasound probe to thoroughly examine the veins and arteries. This allows visualization of any issues, such as abnormal valve function in veins, atherosclerotic changes, or the presence of blood clots or anatomical variations.
Doppler Ultrasound of Veins and Arteries in Lower Extremities - Indications

Doppler ultrasound examination of arteries is indicated in cases of peripheral artery disease, pain, coldness, numbness, or tingling in the lower extremities, as well as after vascular reconstruction or graft placement. On the other hand, Doppler ultrasound examination of veins is recommended for evaluating pain, swelling, numbness, or sensory disturbances in the lower extremities, as well as for suspected venous thrombosis.
In cases of suspected liver dysfunction, Doppler ultrasound examination is a primary diagnostic tool for assessing the vascular system of the liver. It allows for the detection of features such as portal hypertension, portal vein and hepatic vein thrombosis, or narrowing of the hepatic artery. For resistant arterial hypertension, Doppler ultrasound of the renal arteries is the first-line examination to assess arterial narrowing leading to hypertension. Doppler ultrasound is also the basic diagnostic method for identifying the causes of recurrent proteinuria and hematuria. It allows for the evaluation of the vascular system in the abdominal cavity, which in selected cases may lead to the occurrence of these disorders (nutcracker syndrome). Dizziness, fainting, balance disturbances, and tinnitus, and eventually, stroke are some of the primary symptoms of carotid artery stenosis. In the Doppler ultrasound examination of the carotid arteries, we can assess the degree of potential stenosis or kinks in the carotid arteries and, based on this, determine whether surgical treatment is necessary.
